Bless the Lord, O My Soul

Bless the Lord, O my soul!
O Lord my God, you are very great!
You are clothed with splendor and majesty,
covering yourself with light as with a garment,
stretching out the heavens like a tent.
He lays the beams of his chambers on the waters;
he makes the clouds his chariot;
he rides on the wings of the wind;
he makes his messengers winds,
his ministers a flaming fire.
He set the earth on its foundations,
so that it should never be moved.
— Psalm 104:1-5

Have you ever experienced a time where you were so taken aback by the majesty of God? Perhaps you were stargazing on a clear night and looked upon millions of shimmering stars, or maybe you reached the top of a mountain and set your eyes on a vast landscape of snowy mountains and forests. Or perhaps sitting on a beach looking out to the vast ocean with colors of blue and green. It is easy to have these experiences and think “Wow, God, You’re so great! I bless Your name!”

But what about when it’s a cloudy evening and the stars are completely covered, or you’ve reached the bottom of the mountain and the beautiful landscapes are nowhere to be seen, or on a foggy day when you can’t see past the shoreline? Is it still easy to tell of the Lord’s majesty and greatness in those moments or are we quick to doubt and complain?

Oftentimes, it is harder to say “Bless the Lord!” when we turn on the news and see the results of a broken, divided nation and a world ravaged by disease and poverty. We wonder if God is still working when we see the results of sin wreaking havoc all around us. In these situations, it is easier to respond in defeat, pessimism,  and even hopelessness at what we see.

But friends, I want to encourage you today that God is still “very great”! These verses in Psalm 104 are a reminder that He is Lord over all! He is the One who has “set the earth on its foundations, so that it should never be moved.” Let us not doubt or lose hope because we serve a truly majestic God, one who is still in control and is still working, even when we can’t see through the clouds or fog. Let your soul be encouraged and full of faith today, and let us worship this great God and bless His name together!

God, we worship You! We bless Your name! You are an awesome God, clothed in splendor and majesty. We thank You that You are Lord over the heavens and the earth. You have set the earth on its foundations and it shall never be moved! We praise You Lord! May Your praise be continually on our lips, even when we only see clouds and fog, Lord we choose to trust You. We choose to trust that You are always working and You are in control. We thank You Lord. Amen.
