Praying in Light of the Presidential Election

There have been diverse responses to the presidential election results, thus far. In this article we will look at two Scriptures to give direction for how we can pray in light of these times. I’d love to hear from you, so please let us know what you think.

First of all, then, I urge that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and thanksgivings be made for all people, for kings and all who are in high positions, that we may lead a peaceful and quiet life, godly and dignified in every way.
— 1 Timothy 2:1-2

I saw in the night visions,
and behold, with the clouds of heaven
there came one like a son of man,
and he came to the Ancient of Days
and was presented before him.
And to him was given dominion
and glory and a kingdom,
that all peoples, nations, and languages
should serve him;
his dominion is an everlasting dominion,
which shall not pass away,
and his kingdom one
that shall not be destroyed.
— Daniel 7:13-14

Even though both of these passages speak to earthly governments, they differ with respect to who is ruling. In 1 Timothy 2:1-2, human kings and governing officials are in view. In Daniel, Jesus takes the spotlight. I take these differences not to be contradictions but instructions that we should pray for the best for human kings and also for the increasing rule of the King of all kings.

We could miss God’s intent in our prayers if we only focus on earthly governments or only on His heavenly government. It would be a mistake if we only pray for “spiritual” things and ignore this historic event in our nation. On the other hand, we would go astray if we intercede exclusively for America’s government and neglect supplications for God’s kingdom to come on earth as in heaven.

We can, and must, remember both petitions in our prayers. Let’s pray for the “horizontal” government in our land and for the “vertical” government of the Lord of all lords. It is this biblical perspective that informed the prayer we posted on social media this week, and I will include it in essence here in conclusion.

Our Father, we are praying for a godly posture among American Christians, especially as it pertains to this presidential election. We ask for integrity in our election process to be established, for fairness in the ensuing legal process, for the executive branch that will honor Your ways, and for peace in the outcome. Above all and despite all, grant us to keep praying and working for the advancement of Your eternal kingdom in our nation and every nation for Your glory. In the name of the King of all kings we pray, amen.
