In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things were made through him, and without him was not any thing made that was made. In him was life, and the life was the light of men. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.
— John 1:1-5
Great spiritual darkness covered God’s people and the whole earth at the time of Jesus’ incarnation (cf. Isaiah 9:2-7). There was a famine of the word of God in the intertestamental period (cf. Amos 8:11). Hope for God’s coming Kingdom was running out. But the darkness could not overcome the Light.
The Life entered this world and defeated death itself. The Light shined in this dark existence and destroyed the works of the devil. And Jesus’ light has been shining into the darkness of every continent and island on this terrestrial ball ever since. His gospel will cover the entire face of the earth very soon. The darkness cannot overcome His light.
We see the darkness encroaching upon our nation, and we are concerned. Take heart, and pray. The darkness will never win. The Lord’s light is shining still. And we beseech God that He will brighten our country yet again.
Remember the Lord. He is a God who enlightens dark places and brings life where there is death. He is the same yesterday, today, and forever. Continue to pray for a renewal of God’s work in our nation, despite every display of darkness. For, “in him was life, and the life was the light of men.”
