Seeking God in September - Final

Oh give thanks to the LORD; call upon his name; make known his deeds among the peoples!

Seek the LORD and his strength; seek his presence continually!

Christian Union began “Seeking God in September” as a means to encourage thousands of Christians in the United States to love God, obey God and seek God wholeheartedly.  Today, September 30, is the last day of this special emphasis of daily devotions.  God is our answer and our hope – the center of our lives and the center of all creation.  As humanity, all of whom are made in His glorious image, seek Him wholeheartedly, He is pleased and draws near to the creatures that He loves.  

A professor of church history at the University of Virginia, Robert Louis Wilken, believes that Psalm 105:4 is possibly the most descriptive passage in the Bible of the Christian church for the first four hundred years of its history.  The church sincerely and diligently sought God wholeheartedly, and it is no wonder that God responded by pouring out supernatural love, miracles, and incredible strength to stay faithful to Him even in the midst of mass martyrdom.  These early saints displayed extraordinary strength by the Spirit of God, because they knew God and drew on the abiding presence of Jesus Christ in their lives.  

God is a faithful God who keeps His promises, which means that His servants have every right to believe deep in their hearts that He will reward those who diligently pursue Him.  Seeking Him takes time, however, and unless Christians are willing to die to themselves, repent of all self-indulgence and make Him the number one priority, they cannot expect a heavenly visitation of any significance.  First century Christians devoted themselves to prayer and the Word at least twice daily – morning and evening – and also sought Him through a regular pattern of fasting Wednesdays and Fridays.  They periodically gathered for longer periods of devotion in line with the two annual week-long feasts of the Jews, and participated in multi-day periods of prayer and fasting.  They repented of their sins and sought to obey Him with great faithfulness and diligence, no matter the sacrifice or cost.  They truly believed that he who loses his life is the one who finds it.
